By Loretta Nemeth

BURTON, Ohio C The Friends of the Shrine of Our Lady of Mariapoch are giving out “shiners.” No, they are not blackening eyes! Inspired by the “Shrine Shine,” the successful teen volunteer work weekend this summer, the Friends want to acknowledge those who have helped the shrine to shine this past season with “shiner” awards.

Several people or organizations have adopted shrine/statue areas: Basilian Associates - Our Lady of Perpetual Help Altar; Boy Scout Troop #532 - Lady of Fatima, as well as clean-up; Byzantine “Shrine Shine” teens - Stations of the Cross; the Dirda Family - Sacred Heart of Jesus, Sacred Heart of Mary; Tom Ivanec and the Nagy Family - Mary and Bernadette; Norm Kammer and Bonnie Burke - entrances to shrine; John Kurilec - Protection of the Mother of God, as well as maintenance, watering plants; Don and Shirley LaFleur - St. Ann; Barberton Friends of the Shrine Holy Family- Our Lady of Perpetual Help Statue; the Greg Loya Family - St. Therese; St. Helen=s, the Edge Youth Group - Infant of Prague, as well as mulching; the Seaman Family - Lourdes Grotto; and Youngstown-Warren-Sharon Carpatho-Rusyn Society - three gardens along the roadside and St. Francis.

Others who have helped this season include: Bob Dirda - kitchen management; Eikona Studios Nick Loya and Christine Uveges – children’s activities and new sign on Mumford Road; GCU Lodge 302 - benefit clam bake; Tony Kolinsky - tractor work; Louie Koleszar, Carl Walkush and Bert Wilkinson - lawn mowing and maintenance; Mary Lencse, Lory Nemeth and Steve Trudick - support; Stephanie Moore - grant writing; Richard Plishka and Julie Hritz - Teen “Shrine Shine”; Steve Sas - tree trimming; The Little Warehouse Jim and Pat Leswnick - raffle tickets.

And “shiner” awards go to the Carpatho-Rusyn Society; the Eparchy of Parma (Bishop Romzha Day); GCU District 3; and Holy Spirit, Holy Transfiguration, St. Joseph, St. Ladislaus, St. Mary Magdalene and St. Nicholas (Lorain) parishes for all holding activities at the shrine.
